Timm Sonnenschein is a German-born UK based documentary photographer and educator. As a dedicated idealist his photographic work is informed by a search for social and political justice. He seeks to empathise with those he photographs and has been using photography as a tool to create critical observations of social awareness and change. His work attempts to open a dialogue, which encourages empathetic insights that aim at strengthening dignity and respect within an often divided society.

He is the designer and co-editor of Born of Fire and the Void Buddhist zine. As a senior lecturer within Birmingham City University’s School of Visual Communication he is directing the delivery of their Wuhan, China based Birmingham Institute of Fashion and Creative Art (BIFCA) partner course.

He is a member of the Triratna Buddhist Order and was given the name Alokavira (Sanskrit ‘Hero of Light’) during his ordination in 2004.

Timm is a member of the National Union of Journalists and the photo agency Report Digital.
